Long drives
I like driving so the fact that my work requires long drives across the eastern part of the island of Newfoundland is not a hardship. Today, however, driving from Corner Brook towards Baie Verte on the peninsula of the same name, was anything but pleasant. With sheets of rain coming down and the water accumulating on the road, it was a slow and exhausting drive. The fog did not help either. Even in those conditions, you can't help but admire the natural beauty and ruggedness of this place.
While the road was messy and treacherous in places, the sounds all around were quite something. From the rain hammering on the roof of the car and the sloshing of wheels as they would occasionally skid on water covering the road to the roar of the transport trucks and the massive amounts of water they would throw over me as they passed, the drive provided a very cinematic soundtrack. I did stop to make a few photos in the rain, but didn't want to fumble with my audio recorder while driving.
The drive reminded me of this video featuring Emin Özmen. I know it's a promo for Fuji, but it's still interesting to see.
Speaking of sound, here is a couple of links to places that curate and collect sounds. Cities and Memory is a massive project and their library of obsolete sounds is a quirky and funky mix of sometimes ridiculously mundane sounds. You can listen to the sound itself and also a track that combines it into a different listening experience. SONIME is a project based in Austria and it explores the history of acoustic letters.
As always, no paywall and no special paid content, but should you feel so inclined, you can always buy me a coffee.
